On February 13, 1988, the Winter Olympics opened in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  They were the first Winter Olympics held in Canada and a record number of nations participated for the time.

The third Winter Olympic Games open in Lake Placid, New York. They were the first games held in the US and showed the world that the US could host the games as well as European nations.

On July 19, 1980, the Summer Olympic Games opened in Moscow, Soviet Union.  They were the first Olympics to be held in Eastern Europe.

Olympic swimmer Helene Emma Madison was born on June 19, 1913, in Madison, Wisconsin. 

On January 25, 1932, the US Post Office Department issued its first stamp honoring the Olympic Games.

On February 4, 1932, the first Winter Olympics held in the United States opened in Lake Placid, New York.

The Games of the XXIX Olympiad opened in Beijing, China, on August 8, 2008.

On July 30, 1932, the Games of the X Olympiad opened in Los Angeles, California.

On July 28, 1984, the Summer Olympic Games opened in Los Angeles, California.
