On February 8, 1693, a royal charter officially established the College of William and Mary.  Today it’s the second-oldest college in America (behind Harvard).

Artist Albert Bierstadt was born on January 7, 1830, in Solingen, Germany.

On December 27, 1980, the USPS issued the first stamp in the Great Americans Series, which would go on to become the longest-running US definitive series.

December 20, 1812, is generally believed to be the day that Sacagawea died in Kenel, South Dakota.

On July 15, 1885, The Niagara Reservation State Park (later renamed Niagara Falls State Park) became America’s first state park.

Future President John Calvin Coolidge Jr. was born on Independence Day, July 4, 1872.  He spent his early years in the New England town of Plymouth Notch, Vermont.

On June 29, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt established Mesa Verde National Park, the first American park created to “preserve the works of man.”

America’s 22nd and 24th president, Grover Cleveland, died on June 24, 1908, in Princeton, New Jersey.

On May 21, 1804, Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery departed St. Charles on the Missouri River to begin their exploration of the American West.
