Flags

On December 3, 1775, the Grand Union flag was reportedly flown for the first time. It was also the first time an American flag was raised over an American naval vessel.

On July 14, 1932, the International Peace Garden was dedicated, representing the peaceful relationship between the United States and Canada.

On June 14, 2008, the USPS issued the first set of stamps in its Flags of Our Nation Series. 

On February 23, 1976, the USPS issued its first 50-stamp se-tenant.

On June 22, 1942, Congress formally adopted the Pledge of Allegiance.

On March 10, 1804, the US flag was raised over St. Louis, marking the completion of the Louisiana Purchase.  This day, along with March 9, is known as Three Flags Day.

On July 16, 1790, the District of Columbia was established with George Washington’s signing of the Residence Act.

On July 4, 1957, the US Post Office issued its first stamp with the US flag as the central design.  It was also the first stamp printed by the Giori press, which allowed the design to be printed in its natural colors in one step.
